SIR BRIAN JOINS UPPER RANKS OF JUDICIARY.

A LIVERPOOL-born judge who chaired an inquiry into the behaviour of the British press joined the upper ranks of the judiciary.

Lord Justice - Sir Brian - Leveson, who is Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University, was made President of the Queen's Bench Division of the High Court at an event in London.

Dozens of judges gathered to see Sir Brian, who chaired the Leveson Inquiry, sworn in at the Royal Courts of Justice.

The appointment places Sir Brian, a Court of Appeal judge since 2006, in the third rank of the judiciary in England and Wales behind Sir John Thomas, the new Lord Chief Justice and Lord Dyson, Master of the Rolls.

Sir Brian sat alongside Sir John and Lord Dyson - plus Sir Terence Etherton, head of the Chancery Division of the High Court, and Sir James Munby, President of the Family Division of the High Court, as he took office.

Queen's Bench Division judges analyse damages claims for personal injury, negligence plus libel and slander.
