Byline: By Mickey McMonagle & Avril Cadden

ALESHA DIXON

THE BOY DOES NOTHING *****

Alesha, what have you done? I understand you had to try to cash in on your mainstream fame and slick, sassy pop was the way to go. But you should've run a mile from this Lou Vega-inspired Mambo No.5 rip-off. MM

BEYONCE

IF I WERE A BOY *****

The bootylicious babe bites back at bad boyfriends in this ballad by imagining the world through a man's eyes. Her outstanding vocals are full of conviction and it's no surprise she's turned to producer Toby Gad, who co-wrote Fergie's Big Girls Don't Cry. AC

THE CHARLATANS

OH VANITY *****

A welcome re-release for this excellent single which didn't achieve what it deserved last time. Oh Vanity shows The Charlies are back to their best and the big chorus is perfect for festivals - just like the rest of their classics. And Tim Burgess has lost none of his talent for clever lyrics . MM

TOM JONES

IF HE SHOULD EVER LEAVE YOU *****

The Sexbomb superstar's sultry singing hits the spot with an old-style Northern Soul sound. Fellow Taff Duffy is at the centre of its revival but Tom was there first time round. Not a stand-out but it gets under your skin. AC

LEMAR

IF SHE KNEW *****

It's easy to forget Lemar's roots in reality TV show Fame Academy - his impressive soulful vocals have won him well-deserved respect. This is a decent pop single in the mould of Kanye West and Ne-Yo, so he's leaving his old R&B sound behind. AC

FRIENDLY FIRES

PARIS *****

I hated this song at first. I hated the intro, the downbeat vocals and found the silly, simple lyrics annoying. But the soaraway chorus redeems it and by the end of the song it's euphoric. Along the lines of Hot Chip, Daft Punk and Klaxons, it's good fun. AC

STEREOPHONICS

A DECADE IN THE SUN *****

They are not the trendiest band on the planet but this brilliant two-CD compilation could convert even the most avid non-believer. You can't deny there are stunning songs in their back catalogue. The Welsh rockers' big ones are all here from the staggering Dakota to the pretty-much-perfect Local Boy In A Photograph. MM

CHRISTINA AGUILERA

A DECADE OF HITS *****

It's unbelievable that Xtina has been around for 10 years, going from minxy teen to filthy vixen to demure mother. Here we have early hits What A Girl Wants and Genie In A Bottle, the raunchy Dirrty and Fighter and more recent Ain't No Other Man. There's nothing here that will change your mind if you don't like her already. MM
