SINGLES & ALBUMS; mailmusic reviews.

Byline: By Mickey McMonagle & Avril Cadden

KINGS OF LEON

SEX ON FIRE ***** Far and away the best thing this stunning band have ever done, this single is a masterpiece of understated rock. It's powerful yet restrained and while the lyrics may be slightly out there, it's an amazing song which deserves to top the charts. MM

TRAVIS

SOMETHING ANYTHING

*****

From the start of this new single you're hooked by the big guitar riffs. It has more muscle than usual and there's even a slight menace. It bodes well for their forthcoming album, I can't wait to hear it. AC

METRONOMY

HEARTBREAKER *****

This band sound a bit like Bloc Party and this is an electro pop tune with an 80s vibe you feel you should be swaying your ra-ra skirt to. It wouldn't be out of place in the film Pretty In Pink. What's not to love? Watch out for them. MM

IGLU & HARTLY

IN THIS CITY *****

The debut single from this Los Angeles five-piece has hit written all over it. It's a summery mix of pop and new wave with hip hop thrown in but oddly it works with hooks big enough to snare a whale.AC

VIAROSA

SEND FOR THE SEA *****

Described as a country-wired Echo And The Bunnymen, the London group offer dark acoustic gothic vibes which also reminds of Nick Cave.

It's dark, gloomy and beautiful with rockier tracks like Beggars And Thieves while Ode To Sunlight is delicate with violins and flutes. MM

KATY PERRY

ONE OF THE BOYS *****

OK,so she has notched up a No.1 and God only knows how many column inches by singing about snogging girls and cherry chapsticks. But Katy is more than just good publicist. Her quirky view on life and good turn of phrase makes her album likeable and a bit silly, and an unusual voice lends itself well to her songs. Worth buying. MM

THE CORAL

THE SINGLES COLLECTION

******

CD1 is as expected with Dreaming Of You, Pass It On and In The Morning. But CD2 has 19 rareties including a great version of Harry Nilsson's Everybody's Talking At Me and The Everly Brothers'Bye Bye Love. New songs Michael's Song and The Golden Bough show there's more to come from this band.AC

THE UNDERTONES

ANTHOLOGY *****

This massive compilation is a treat for fans of the Derry punk legends and the uninitiated alike. It boasts 52 tracks,27 of them previously unreleased demos, new versions, live and session takes. These CDs bring back just what an exciting band they were - and Teenage Kicks remains hard to beat when it comes to perfect pop punk.MM
