SIMPLIMATIC INTRODUCES NEW CONVEYOR MODULES WHICH ADVANCE PCB ASSEMBLY
LINE AUTOMATION, PERMIT LOW-COST RECONFIGURING, HAND-FREE ACCESS
ANAHEIM, Calif., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- New conveyor modules that make access possible through and over long PCB production lines, a buffer unit that holds PCBs in a holding pattern to reduce the impact of short stoppages on assembly lines, and conveyor sections that automatically load and unload 50-PCB storage racks for expedited movement within an electronics plant.
These were highlights of the innovative modules for PCB assembly lines introduced here by Simplimatic Engineering Company, of Lynchburg, Va., at Nepcon West '92 being held at the Anaheim Convention Center. Simplimatic, a leading designer and manufacturer of automated conveyor lines, is part of CMB Packaging, the world's third largest packaging company.
"To keep up with continuing innovation in electronic equipment which faces fierce competition in the world market, PCB assembly lines must be highly automated and able to be reconfigured at minimum cost," it was explained by Thomas DiNardo, business unit manager of Simplimatic's Electronics Assembly Division.
"This is why automated conveyor systems have been developed that meet three essential criteria," DiNardo said. "First, they must provide positive, gentle movement of PCBs and other components, and second, they must be designed in modular units that can be readily moved and reinstalled most economically to meet changing production requirements. Third, they must expedite continuing operation of production lines by being highly reliable," he continued.
In addition to providing controlled movement, the new modules feed PCBs into wave solder machines at the correct angle, load magazines or storage racks for efficient transfer within a plant, and permit hand- free access to both sides of assembly lines.
 The new Simplimatic modules include:
-- A three-unit assembly of conveyors which provides a passageway over long PCB assembly lines.
-- A second unit which allows easy access to the other side of a production line is Model 8045 Lift Gate, which functions like half a drawbridge.
-- Model 8045 Slide and Turn edge belt conveyor makes it possible for PCBs being assembled to turn 90 degree corners, left or right, or to be merged into a single assembly line, or to split into two lines.
-- Model 8200 quick-width adjustment magazines facilitate movement of batches of up to 50 PCBs from one process line to another.
-- Model 8130 Magazine Loader, installed at the end of assembly lines, loads PCBs one at a time into empty 50-board magazines so they can be transferred efficiently to the next process or assembly line.
-- Model 8130 Magazine Unloader, designed for use at the start of assembly lines, accepts magazines loaded with PCBs and dispenses the boards one at a time onto an edge guide belt conveyor which transfers them to the next station for processing.
-- Model 8080 First In First Out (FIFO) Buffer, which acts as a temporary collection or storage center on the assembly line, to prevent short stoppages at one station from shutting down all preceding or downstream processes on the line. The buffer can automatically queue up 65 PCBs and hold them until the stoppage is cleared.
