SIMPACT ANNOUNCES WORLDWIDE SUPPORT AGREEMENT WITH DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORP.

Digital to Provide Around-the-Clock Support For
 Simpact's Freeway(TM) Communications Server
SAN DIEGO, Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Simpact Associates, a leading supplier of hardware and software solutions for LAN-to-WAN connectivity, and Digital Equipment Corp. today announced an agreement under which Digital will provide worldwide technical and customer support for Simpact's Freeway(TM), a family of programmable communications gateway servers. This increased level of service will provide both Simpact and Digital customers with immediate access to telephone and on-site support for their mission-critical applications, ensuring maximum up-time and uninterrupted service.
"For more than 20 years, Simpact's state-of-the-art services, products and systems have provided reliable connectivity solutions for financial, telecommunications, SCADA and transportation markets," states Victor Forgetta, vice president of Marketing for Simpact's Connectivity division. "Our customers have come to rely on these real-time applications for their critical day-to-day operations. A stock market feed that is delayed by even a fraction of a second renders its recipient at a competitive disadvantage. Satellite
transmissions for air-traffic control are equally as time-sensitive. Based on the specialized requirements of our customers, it is important to provide them with the best possible support. Having worked with Digital for many years; we knew that they were the right service provider for our customers' mission-critical needs."
Through this support agreement, Simpact-trained Digital representatives are authorized to provide hardware support for the Freeway using Simpact supplied parts. "This agreement allows Digital to provide Simpact's customers with the single-source maintenance solutions they require," says Jack Westermeyer, strategic alliances manager for Digital's multivendor customer business unit. "This is further evidence of our commitment to support our customers' entire multivendor environments. And we'll continue to expand the breadth and depth of that support to meet the needs of customers like those with both Simpact and Digital technology."
Simpact's Freeway is redefining what the role of communications servers will be within a real-time, mission-critical, LAN-to-WAN networking environment. Running TCP/IP over Ethernet, the family of Freeway servers provides users with a seamless migration path from host- based communications to distributed open systems. Freeway offers 8 to 64 serial ports and uses a powerful Motorola 68040 microprocessor, giving users the flexibility to expand their networking options for a fraction of the cost normally associated with upgrades.
The current support agreement is an extension to an earlier service agreement between the two companies, under which Digital has provided customer support service to Simpact's 16xx and 32xx Intelligent Communications Processor (ICP) boards. These boards work as front-end processors providing high-speed data communications for DEC Q-bus systems, and are programmable for bit-synch, byte-synch and asynchronous protocols providing real-time support for LAN-to-WAN networks.
"By combining our LAN-to-WAN communications expertise with Digital's global network of field service and customer support centers, we're giving our customers the best of both worlds," says Forgetta. "We are very pleased to be working with Digital on such a broad scale."
Incorporated in 1972, Simpact is a privately held, employee-owned company headquartered in San Diego. Simpact provides connectivity solutions for multinational corporations, financial institutions, utilities and government agencies worldwide.
Digital Equipment Corp. is the world's leader in open client/server solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information systems.
