SILICON GRAPHICS UNVEILS NEW GRAPHICAL TOOLS FOR NETWORKS
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) today introduced two graphical tools to assist users in achieving peak performance from their network environments. The tools include NetVisualyzer(TM) 2.0, an enhanced version of the industry's first real-time visual network monitoring and diagnostic tool that gives users increased power and ease of use in network analysis. The company also announced IRIS Impressario(TM), a dynamic set of software tools for Silicon Graphics systems that dramatically boosts workgroup printer utilization and performance.
NetVisualyzer 2.0 software is the latest release of the company's unique graphical network monitoring tool that features a more intuitive user interface, decoding support for more network protocols, new analysis tools and support for Sun Microsystems workstations as network probes. The announcement of IRIS Impressario software is the first release of Silicon Graphics' graphical printer toolkit for networked systems.
"Silicon Graphics continues to apply its visual computing expertise to solving the challenges of distributed environments," said Paul Koontz, director of marketing for Silicon Graphics' Computer systems Group. "NetVisualyzer 2.0 and IRIS Impressario demonstrate the application of our visual technology and experience to the challenge of network operations and distributed computing, enabling users to maximize the performance of their networked systems."
NetVisualyzer gives network managers the ability to monitor heterogeneous network traffic graphically in real time. The product comprises several software tools for the monitoring and diagnosis of traffic networks, subnets and segments. The 2.0 version includes a program called Browser, a management information base (MIB) browser that lets users quickly access information about systems on the network through a point-and-click interface. NetVisualyzer 2.0 also includes NetTop, a tool that offers a dynamic three-dimensional view that describes the busiest nodes on the network in real time. NetTop enables users to identify quickly where network traffic is concentrated so that bottlenecks can be addressed.
IRIS Impressario software enables users on any Silicon Graphics system to take advantage of local and network printers easily and efficiently. Users can execute, manage and monitor their print jobs with drop-and-drag icons, printer status icons and dialog boxes. In addition, IRIS Impressario dramatically reduces printing time by using the compute power of Silicon Graphics systems to perform PostScript(TM) Raster Image Processing -- a function usually performed much more slowly on the printer itself.
IRIS Impressario is available immediately from Silicon Graphics. NetVisualyzer 2.0 is scheduled for availability in December 1992.
