SILICON GRAPHICS UNVEILS INDUSTRY'S BROADEST SERVER OFFERING; HIGHLY SCALEABLE LINE SPANS ONE TO 36-PROCESSOR SERVERS

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) today dramatically expanded its computer offering with the introduction of the industry's most scaleable server series. The new Challenge(TM) line is the only binary-compatible network resource server line that spans from entry-level uniprocessor systems to enterprise-wide symmetric multiprocessing systems that deliver more than 4,000 Dhrystone MIPS of performance.
The Challenge line includes three server models: The Challenge XL enterprise symmetric multiprocessing system, which includes up to 36 processors for the highest levels of performance and expandability; the Challenge L departmental symmetric multiprocesing system with up to 12 processors, offering price/performance leadership; and the Challenge M single-processor workgroup server. The Challenge line lets users create powerful and cost-effective distributed computing environments by managing network resource tasks such as transparent data access, mass storage sharing, digital media networking, communication services and technical database applications.
"The combination of Silicon Graphics' IRIS(R) workstations and Challenge servers creates the industry's most complete, binary- compatible technical computing solution," said Tom Jermoluk, chief operating officer of Silicon Graphics. "Built on Silicon Graphics' six years of experience in RISC and coherent shared memory multiprocessing technologies, Challenge servers meet the needs of technical professionals by providing performance, flexibility and ease- of-use that is unmatched in the industry."
The Challenge line will be available from Silicon Graphics beginning in the first quarter of 1993. Pricing starts at under $20,000 for the Challenge M server, under $70,000 for the Challenge L server, and under $120,000 for the high-end Challenge XL enterprise system.
