SILICON GRAPHICS TO PROVIDE ONLINE DOCUMENTATION, SUPPORT
AND SERVICES IN A SINGLE, INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENT
CHICAGO, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) today announced the IRIS InSight(TM) family of customer support products featuring online documentation, support information, system diagnostics and electronic access to technical assistance. This product family offers a full complement of support services within a single, integrated environment. Silicon Graphics' IRIS InSight is a standards-based support system, allowing customers and independent software vendors to add their own information and leverage online information across other platforms.
"The IRIS InSight support system is a significant leap forward over first generation online support systems currently available on the market," said Bert Forniciari, vice president of the Customer Support Division at Silicon Graphics. "IRIS InSight puts the power of information into the hands of those who need it, when they need it. It is a critical component of our strategy for empowering and supporting our customers."
The IRIS InSight family consists of four independent but compatible products: IRIS InSight Library, IRIS InSight Task Assist, IRIS InSight Diagnostics, and IRIS InSight Electronic Services.
Based on such industry standards as the X Window System(TM), Motif(TM) and Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), IRIS InSight's generalized approach allows users to share information between platforms. The IRIS InSight viewer, which allows quick and easy access to online documentation, is an enhanced and customized version of the SGML-based viewer by Electronic Book Technologies. Silicon Graphics chose EBT's DynaText(TM) as the basis for this program because of its industry-leading SGML technology. The viewer enables full-text search, hyperlinks and other advanced navigation features, as well as support for digital media technologies.
All IRIS InSight products operate on Silicon Graphics systems supporting IRIX(TM) 4.0.1 and will be available in the fourth calendar quarter of 1992. The viewer and document library will be shipped with new system shipments and major operating system releases. An IRIS InSight product bundle consisting of the viewer, document and support libraries, task assist and diagnostics will be sold for under $1,500. IRIS InSight Electronic Services will be available to IRIS Support Partners and the IRIS Varsity Program(TM) participants in the United States and Canada only.
