SILICON GRAPHICS TAKES AIM AT SUPERCOMPUTING MARKET WITH POWER CHALLENGE; NEW LINE SHATTERS SUPERCOMPUTING PRICE/PERFORMANCE

 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) today announced a new computer line that puts the power of up to 18 Cray Y-MP(TM) class supercomputers in a single RISC-based system. The Power Challenge(TM) shared-memory symmetric multiprocessing systems, based on the new 64-bit MIPS(R) TFP streaming superscalar RISC processor, shatter supercomputer price/performance levels, delivering up to 5.4 GFLOPS of peak performance, with prices starting at under $120,000.

"The Power Challenge line represents a paradigm shift in technical computing, dramatically broadening the accessibility of supercomputing power so that a wide range of technical professionals can now focus on the great questions of science."
 Power Challenge systems incorporate the breakthrough TFP RISC processor that puts Cray Y-MP class performance in a single-chip set. While the cost of traditional supercomputers has restricted their use to major research laboratories and specialized facilities, Power Challenge systems are designed to be easy to deploy and use, enabling more scientists and technical professionals to focus on the solution of "grand challenges." These grand challenges, outlined in a 1992 United States Office of Science and Technology Policy report for the Presidential Initiative in High Performance Computing and Communications, include the prediction of weather and global change, semiconductor design, superconductivity, structural biology, the human genome, astronomy and transportation.
 "Silicon Graphics is fundamentally changing the way scientists work, eliminating the need for multi-million dollar supercomputers based on esoteric technologies through very high-performance, affordable systems based on standard RISC architectures," said Forest Baskett, senior vice president of research and development at Silicon Graphics. "The integration of Cray Y-MP performance in a single chip set, combined with our ability to incorporate 18 of these processors in a true symmetric multiprocessing architecture, forms the basis for this price/performance revolution."
 The Power Challenge line includes two models: the Power Challenge L deskside system configured with two to six TFP processors for up to 1.8 GFLOPS of peak performance, and the Power Challenge XL rack system with two to 18 TFP processors for up to 5.4 GFLOPS of peak performance.
 The Power Challenge line will be available from Silicon Graphics in the first half of 1994. Pricing starts at under $120,000 for the Power Challenge L deskside supercomputing system and under $170,000 for the high-end Power Challenge XL supercomputing system.
