SILICON GRAPHICS JOINS THE COUSTEAU SOCIETY IN ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORT
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) announced today it has joined a global, nonpartisan effort to declare future generations' rights to exist on an environmentally healthy planet. Silicon Graphics is the first computer manufacturer to pledge support for The Cousteau Society's Petition for the Rights of Future Generations.
As part of the company's S.A.V.E. (Scientific Analysis and Visualization of the Environment) program, the effort will make available The Cousteau Society's petition to more than 40,000 readers of IRIS Universe, a semi-monthly magazine focused on Silicon Graphics' products and technology. The five-point document appears in the latest issue of the magazine. Signed by renowned undersea explorer Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and his son, Jean-Michel Cousteau, the petition proclaims that future generations "have a right to an uncontaminated and undamaged Earth."
"Silicon Graphics launched the S.A.V.E. program because the company recognizes the critical need to find solutions quickly to today's most critical environmental problems," said Edward R. McCracken, president and CEO of Silicon Graphics. "We have worked hard to institute policies that respect the rights of our employees as human beings. Those policies would be incomplete without a sound and diligent environmental program."
Signatures collected through IRIS Universe distribution will join other signatures gathered worldwide. The Cousteau Society will present all signed petitions to the United Nations when it convenes in 1993. Captain Cousteau will urge the U.N. General Assembly to adopt the Bill of Rights for Future Generations.
"Our generation is just one in a long succession of generations," Captain Cousteau said. "We are faced with the results of what our ancestors did, and our future generations will be forced to deal with the results of what we are doing today. We launched this petition because we feel that humankind has forgotten this essential truth."
The Cousteau Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of life for all generations. Created in 1973, the society has 350,000 members worldwide.
Silicon Graphics Inc. is the leading manufacturer of visual computing systems. The company delivers three-dimensional graphics, color, audio, video and real-time technologies to the technical, scientific and creative computing marketplace.
