 SILICON GRAPHICS JOINS ACE EXECUTIVE ADVISORY BOARD;
 COMPANY TO LEAD ACE UNIX TECHNICAL WORKGROUP
 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics (NYSE: SGI) today announced that its president and CEO, Edward R. McCracken, has joined the Advanced Computing Environment (ACE) Executive Advisory Committee. Robert Olson, director of technology of Silicon Graphics' System Software Technology Center, will also chair the newly formed UNIX(R) Specification for ACE Technical Workgroup.
 Silicon Graphics is one of 14 companies to join the Executive Advisory Board. The board's charter is to provide strategic leadership and direction for the ACE initiative, to promote a forum where issues associated with ACE can be promptly resolved and to establish technical workgroups chartered with defining Advanced RISC Computing (ARC) and UNIX specifications.
 "ACE has already achieved a number of important milestones, including the definition of the hardware specification," said McCracken. "Once the software standard is defined, a truly open MIPS RISC platform will span the PC and workstation marketplace and enable developers to make dependable decisions when creating software for the architecture. We look forward to being a driving force and integral part of making ACE a reality."
 The newly formed UNIX Specification for ACE Technical Workgroup, led by Olson, consists of 17 ACE members. The first priority of the workgroup will be to define the ACE UNIX binary standard that will enable software to run on multiple ACE platforms with no modification. Commented Olson, "Our goal is not to invent new technologies, but to work together to integrate the existing standard technologies that will be the most effective for software developers and customers alike."
