SILICON GRAPHICS FORMS JOINT VENTURE IN PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA
 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: SGI) announced that it has signed a joint venture contract with five investors through its Hong Kong subsidiary. The newly formed joint venture company, Shenzhen Chess Computer Company Limited, will manufacture Silicon Graphics' IRIS Indigo (TM) RISC PC and develop associated application software in Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The joint venture members include: Yunnan Electronic Equipment Factory (YEEF); Shenzhen, Shekou, Jingshan Technology Development Co. Ltd.; Asia Simulation & Control systems Engineering Corp. Ltd.; Unison Pacific (USA) Investment Company Ltd.; Synergie International Ltd.; and Silicon Graphics, Ltd.
 Chess, located in Shenzhen, Nanshan district, has an initial capital of approximately $3.3 million (U.S.). Plans call for the factory to produce the entire MIPS R3000A (TM) processor-based IRIS Indigo product family using both locally supplied parts and components from Silicon Graphics, Inc. The production from the Shenzhen plant will be targeted at both the China domestic and export markets and is scheduled to start at the end of the year.

"Silicon Graphics is recognized as a world leader in graphics workstations and 3D visualization, and the Indigo has won worldwide acclaim as an innovative RISC-based PC. We could not wish for better partners or a better product for the joint venture."
