SILICON GRAPHICS EXPANDS IRIS INDIGO FAMILY
FEATURE-RICH MODELS CREATE NEW CLASS OF DESKTOP GRAPHICS COMPUTER
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: SGI), today unveiled three new IRIS Indigo(TM) family members that dramatically boost the graphics capabilities and expandability of the RISC PC product line. The new systems are equipped with a powerful new graphics architecture that brings record-setting graphics to the desktop -- graphics performance previously found only in Silicon Graphics' higher-priced IRIS POWER Series(TM) GTX(TM) computers.
"We are excited with the early success of IRIS Indigo in the professional market," stated Edward R. McCracken, president and CEO of Silicon Graphics. "The new family members bring depth to the Indigo product line, offering graphics performance never before possible on the desktop."
The new systems -- IRIS Indigo XS, IRIS Indigo XS24, and IRIS Indigo Elan(TM) -- underscore the flexibility of the IRIS Indigo RISC PC family. Binary compatible with Silicon Graphics' entire IRIS 4D(TM) product line, the IRIS Indigo family is the only line to deliver three-dimensional graphics, DAT-quality audio, video and Advanced Computing Environment (ACE) compatibility. New to the IRIS Indigo line are such features as true 24-bit color, workstation-class resolution, a 72 Hz refresh rate, FDDI connectivity and new graphics capabilities. The new configurations are targeted for a range of market segments from CAD/CAM, molecular modeling and earth sciences, to CASE and publishing.
Among the systems introduced today is IRIS Indigo XS, a virtual 24-bit (8-frame buffer) system with 1280 x 1024 support, 60 or 72 Hz refresh rate and an optional z-buffer. This model has the same graphics features as the high-end Silicon Graphics POWER Series systems with performance equal to today's Personal IRIS(TM) Turbo Graphics. IRIS Indigo XS is priced at $13,000 and includes a 16-inch color monitor, keyboard, mouse and 16 MB of memory. Entry CAD and CASE are two markets targeted for this model.
Silicon Graphics also introduced IRIS Indigo XS24. This model, the first 24-bit, true-color IRIS Indigo, has an optional z-buffer, supports 1280 x 1024 resolution and 60 or 72 Hz refresh rates. It also has the same graphics features as the high-end POWER Series systems with performance equal to today's Personal IRIS Turbo Graphics. The machine is priced at $15,000 and includes a 16-inch color monitor, keyboard, mouse and 16 MB of memory. This system is an excellent choice for professionals doing solids modeling or publishing. The optional z-buffer for both IRIS Indigo XS and IRIS Indigo XS24 is $2,000. Customers wanting to upgrade from IRIS Indigo XS to IRIS Indigo XS24 can add additional color planes for only $2,000.
The flagship of the IRIS Indigo product line is the IRIS Indigo Elan system. IRIS Indigo Elan delivers 1 million 3D vectors per second, 225K 3D triangles/sec. and 100K 3D quads/sec., which reflects the graphics performance of higher-priced POWER Series GTX computers. In addition to 24-bit color and 24-bit z-buffering, the system has features never before found on a desktop system including texturing, transparency and atmospheric effects necessary for real-time motion and interactive realism. Markets requiring the power of IRIS Indigo Express' desktop realism include CAE and molecular modeling. The system price for IRIS Indigo Elan is $27,000 and includes a 19-inch color monitor, keyboard, mouse and 16 MB of memory.
Elan Graphics(TM) will also be available as an upgrade to Personal IRIS 4D/30 and 4D/35 Turbo Graphics systems for $12,000. The upgrade for IRIS Indigo is $16,000. IRIS Indigo users will have an additional charge to upgrade to a 19-inch monitor.
In addition, Silicon Graphics also introduced a dual-headed IRIS Indigo. This single system supports two monitors and is intended for use by professionals requiring extra screen pixels such as those in oil and gas and color publishing. This system price is $15,000, which includes two 16-inch monitors and 16MB memory.
Availability for IRIS Indigo XS, IRIS Indigo XS24, IRIS Indigo Elan and Personal IRIS Elan(TM) is March 1992. The Elan Graphics upgrade will be available in April 1992.
All Silicon Graphics systems run the IRIX(TM) operating system based on UNIX(R) System V. All systems ship with Workspace(TM), a visual interface to IRIX; IRIS Explorer(TM), a data visualization package; and IRIS Showcase(TM), a tool for basic presentation and word processing.
