SILICON GRAPHICS ANNOUNCES DIGITAL MEDIA AS CORE TECHNOLOGY
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: SGI), today announced a new digital media solutions environment that allows users to work easily and simultaneously with 3D graphics, video, 2D images, animation, audio and text -- in any combination.
The new environment includes Silicon Graphics' audio and video hardware, programming libraries, end-user tools and third-party hardware and software products.
In addition, Silicon Graphics and several third-party companies also announced new products and relationships.
"Silicon Graphics will do for digital media technology what it has done for 3D visual computing: deliver a fundamentally better way to communicate to a broader range of customers," said Edward R. McCracken, president and CEO of Silicon Graphics. "By making high-performance audio and video and the full range of digital media capabilities intrinsic to all Silicon Graphics systems, we will raise the level of technology acceptable in a standard computer."
Silicon Graphics Audio and Video Hardware
Silicon Graphics provides highly integrated digital media technology throughout the entire product line. To complement VideoLab(TM), Silicon Graphics' high-end broadcast quality video product, Silicon Graphics announced Indigo Video(TM), a low-cost video board for the IRIS Indigo(TM) RISC PC.
 Silicon Graphics Programming Libraries
Silicon Graphics' new audio and video libraries -- similar to the IRIS Graphics Library(TM) -- provide easy programming access to Silicon Graphics' digital media hardware.
The first release of these new libraries, included in a Digital Media Developer Kit, is a collection of seven programming modules. These libraries are an integral part of the digital media software development environment and provide programming interfaces for audio, Indigo Video, compression and musical instrument digital interface (MIDI). Also included in the Developer Kit is the IRIS Showcase(TM) source code. IRIS Showcase, the interactive presentation tool, is included free with all Silicon Graphics systems.
 Silicon Graphics End-User Tools
Silicon Graphics will provide its customers with bundled software tools, enabling them to have immediate access to the digital media hardware. The end-user tools are an integrated set of easy-to-use software tools designed to give customers the ability to create and edit videos, create and edit audio samples and play back movies. These tools also enable the recording of any NTSC/PAL portion of the screen to external video devices, and the controlling of video hardware and input.
Silicon Graphics has also enhanced IRIS Showcase. The application now gives users the ability to add video windows to a page, providing simple video titling effects which can be easily integrated with the current audio and hyperlinking capabilities.
 Shipping and Availability
The Indigo Video board will be available in June for $2,500. The digital media libraries will also be available in June for $495. The end-user tools will ship with all Silicon Graphics IRIS 4D(TM) systems beginning this quarter.
