        NAMED NATIONAL ENGINEERING MANAGER OF THE YEAR
    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE: SGI) today announced that Edward R. McCracken, president and chief executive officer, was named The National Engineering Manager of the Year by the American Society for Engineering Management.  The award recognizes outstanding accomplishments in applying engineering and management principles in ways that move organizations forward in the global marketplace.
    "Mr. McCracken and the employees of Silicon Graphics are excellent examples of what can be accomplished in an organization that is 'pulling together' to produce quality products and services -- while at the same time putting the customer first," said Ronald B. Cox, dean of engineering at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga.  "We congratulate Silicon Graphics in this outstanding achievement."
    McCracken joined Silicon Graphics in 1984 as president and CEO. Since that time, he has led the organization in the production of the world's premiere family of visual computing systems and in generating revenues of $550 million in fiscal year 1991.  Prior to joining Silicon Graphics, McCracken spent 16 years with the Hewlett-Packard Co., serving most recently as a group general manager in the computer systems area.  McCracken is a director of Digital Research Inc. and the American Electronics Association.  He holds a master's in business administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University.
    McCracken was selected from a group of 15 finalists, all of whom were either academic deans of executive officers in their respective organizations.  The general criteria for selection included:  evidence of being an engineer by training, evidence of exercising engineering and management principles in innovative and positive ways, evidence of the company or organization responding positively to his or her leadership, and evidence of measurable results in the organization that the individual leads.
