SIERRA CLUB MISLEADS PUBLIC MOBIL SAYS
FAIRFAX, VA., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobil Corporation (NYSE: MOB)

described as absurd claims that Mobil's used oil program advertising is deceptive:
Criticism of our advertising is plain wrong. The objective of our advertising is to encourage the proper disposal of used oil. It specifically urges the public to return its used oil to authorized collection centers, such as participating Mobil service stations.
The efforts to kill used oil collection programs threaten a legitimate remedy to a real environmental problem -- the unsafe disposal of used oil that contaminates land and waterways.
Mobil is working hard to make this program a success in towns and cities throughout the country. Attacking the program rather than encouraging it may get headlines but is certainly counter-productive.
Mobil established a used oil collection program in response to an important environmental problem. The EPA says 175 million gallons a year of used motor oil are disposed of improperly -- and often at real environmental risk -- by car owners who change their oil and have no safe way to dispose of it. The EPA has encouraged oil companies to help solve this problem. So have many states. Some states, such as New York and Massachusetts, now, in fact, require used oil collection.
We will make copies of our advertising available to any legitimate news organization.
