SIERRA CLUB EXECUTIVE MICHAEL FISCHER ANNOUNCES INTENTION TO RESIGN
SAN FRANCISCO, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael Fischer today announced his decision to complete his assignment as executive director at the Sierra Club effective Dec. 1, 1992.
The president of the Sierra Club, Phillip Berry, said, "Michael Fischer has made and will continue to make a real contribution to the Sierra Club's achievements. During this highly political year we continue to need his leadership."
Fischer, 51, said, "By the end of this year I will have completed my 32nd year as a professional in environmental planning and management, half of that time as an executive director. I am going to focus my energies on environmental advocacy, rather than on institutional administration. There are many environmental public policy issues facing us that are extremely urgent and I will continue to be a participant and leader."
During his 5-year tenure as executive director, the Sierra Club, now in its 100th year, has won many environmental battles, most importantly to keep Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as a pristine protected area. Fischer worked closely and convincingly with members of Congress to keep this area closed to oil development. Fischer was the leader who helped win that battle.
"There are many challenges facing environmentalists in 1992. For example, I am currently working with Congress to help them pass legislation to protect our ancient forests," said Fisher. "And, just as importantly, the Sierra Club is recognized today as the environmental organization that is reaching out and aligning itself with new communities, particularly people of color. I will continue to be involved and committed to make this happen."
The Sierra Club is a non-profit organization with over 600,000 members. Founded in 1892 by naturalist John Muir, the Sierra Club is celebrating its centennial.
