SIERRA ACQUIRES BRIGHT STAR TECHNOLOGY INC.,
EXPANDING COMMITMENT TO EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE MARKET

New Member of Sierra Family Strengthens Company Through Award-Winning

Language Learning Products, Advanced Video/Voice Synchronization,
 Multimedia Technology and Strong Base
 in Macintosh Software Development
OAKHURST, Calif., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Sierra On-Line (NASDAQ: SIER) today announced the acquisition of Bright Star Technology Inc. Bright Star, whose operations will remain in Bellevue, Wash., will join Dynamix and The Sierra Network as wholly owned, independent business units of Sierra. Bright Star founder, Elon Gasper, and Alan J. Higginson, president, will remain with the company in executive positions.
"Bright Star is an excellent strategic acquisition for Sierra because its high quality software includes the unique feature of synchronized speech which will provide a major advantage to our educational products," explained Ken Williams, president and chief executive officer of Sierra On-Line. "Award-winning Bright Star products, such as Alphabet Blocks, Talking Tiles and other software under development, will make a major contribution toward our goal of leadership in the education market."
Equally important are Bright Star's patented HyperAnimation technologies for combining patterns of human speech and facial images into a talking face representing a powerful architecture which Sierra will incorporate into future interactive entertainment games. Also, Bright Star's expertise in Macintosh software development will be extremely valuable as Sierra aggressively expands its Apple product line-up.
In November 1991, Sierra announced that it is targeting the education market for future growth, setting an ambitious goal of becoming a leader in quality educational software within five years. Since that announcement, the company acquired the exclusive North American distribution rights for the ADI educational software family, developed by Coktel Vision, a leading European educational software publisher. The ADI products focus on basic math, reading and spelling skills for all grade levels with a particular focus on pre- school through middle grades.
"The educational market represents tremendous growth potential for Sierra," Williams noted. "Our strength will be in the unique breadth and diversity of our product offerings. Sierra will develop both home learning and coursework titles for all grade levels on both the PC and Macintosh, skillfully combining our expertise in interactive software with progressive and proven computer learning techniques from around the world.
"This creative, broad-based approach will set us apart from the competition and will give Sierra the same reputation for leadership, innovation and quality in educational software that we have earned in the adventure game market," Williams concluded.
Sierra On-Line Inc., located in Oakhurst, is a leading publisher of high quality, interactive entertainment and educational software for personal computers.
