SIEMENS ULTRASOUND BREAKS GROUND FOR NEW FACILITY IN ISSAQUAH, WASH.

ISSAQUAH, Wash., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ultrasound Group of Siemens Medical Systems Inc. will break ground July 20 for a new 130,000-square-foot facility, the first phase of a planned 250,000-square-foot R&D, manufacturing and headquarters complex, the company announced today.
The ground breaking and planned expansion mark another milestone in the consolidation and expansion of Siemens worldwide ultrasound operations in Issaquah.
According to Lothar Koob, Siemens Medical Systems Group vice president and worldwide head of Ultrasound, the expansion continues Siemens' long-term strategy to remain at the forefront of medical diagnostics -- and especially ultrasound, the largest and fastest- growing imaging modality.
Siemens is the world's largest manufacturer of diagnostic imaging systems and medical electronics products.
"Issaquah is important to Siemens because of the depth of resources we have here, and because of the availability of highly skilled medical, computer and engineering personnel in the area," he said.
Siemens currently employs approximately 450 people at its Issaquah facility. Koob noted that employment could reach 1,000 by the end of the decade.
The first phase is expected to be completed in about a year. Although approvals have been received, no timetable has been announced for construction of the second phase.
The new facility will be located in Issaquah, about 15 miles east of Seattle. Issaquah was the original headquarters of Quantum Medical Systems, an innovator in ultrasound technology and a leading developer of diagnostic ultrasound color flow imaging. Quantum was acquired by Siemens in 1990.
In the United States, Siemens Medical Systems employs more than 7,000 people with annual sales of $1.7 billion.
Siemens Medical Systems is a major operating unit of Siemens Corp., which employs approximately 35,000 people in the United States, with sales of more than $4.9 billion in fiscal 1991/92.
Worldwide, Siemens employs more than 410,000 people, with annual sales of approximately $50 billion.
