SIEMENS STROMBERG-CARLSON TO PROVIDE EWSM PLATFORM
TO AMERITECH FOR SWITCHED MULTI-MEGABIT DATA SERVICES TRIAL
CHICAGO, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Siemens Stromberg-Carlson today announced its EWSM cell switching system will be used by Ameritech to provide switched multi-megabit data services (SMDS) in a technical trial with Chicago area research centers.
Siemens Stromberg-Carlson will supply the data switching platform for Ameritech's SMDS trial, which will enable CICNet, Inc., an Ann Arbor, Mich., data network firm, to provide the University of Illinois- Chicago, Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago access to Internet, the global data network.
EWSM systems provide high-speed access platforms, offering versatile application interconnection utilizing asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching principles.
SMDS is a high-speed, wide-area public switched data service operating at speeds from 1.5 to 34 megabits per second. Because it uses the public telephone network, the service can provide cost-effective solutions to such customer needs as local area network (LAN) interconnection, distributed computing, terminal-to-host communications and image transfer across wide geographic area.
David Friedman, vice president and general manager of product development and data strategy implementation for Ameritech's Bell companies, said the trial will provide insight into customer needs and how best to provide solutions through the evolution of high-speed data communication services.
Van Cullens, senior vice president of Marketing and Business Development for Siemens Stromberg-Carlson, said, "The flexibility of the EWSM cell switching system architecture ensures the ability to provide services today, while at the same time evolving the network to meet data communication needs of the future. Our EWSM customers know that by installing our systems in their networks now, they are laying the groundwork for tomorrow's broadband requirements."
Based in part on the success of this trial, Ameritech plans to offer SMDS to its customers in Illinois and Michigan by the end of 1992. By mid-1993, the services are scheduled for customers in Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
EWSM-based SMDS distance learning capabilities will be demonstrated by Ameritech at its "SuperSchool" centerpiece exhibit at SUPERCOMM/ICC '92 in Chicago with a live link to the Siemens Stromberg-Carlson booth. The industry expo will be held June 15-18 at Chicago's McCormick Place.
Siemens Stromberg-Carlson provides telephone operating companies with advanced, high quality public telecommunications networks. The company designs, develops and manufactures central office digital switching systems, packet switching systems, transmission equipment and EWSM networks.
