SIEMENS STROMBERG-CARLSON DELIVERS SWITCHED 56 DATA SERVICE VIA THE DCO(R) SYSTEM

ATLANTA, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- At SUPERCOMM '93, held here April 20 through 22 at the Georgia World Congress Center, Siemens Stromberg-Carlson will demonstrate Switched 56 data service through the DCO system. In a live medical imaging demonstration, the Switched 56 application will show how doctors can use videoconferencing capability for consultations with distantly located colleagues.
Switched 56 provides high-speed digital data transfer from the customer premise through the public network, eliminating the need for leased lines or modems in data applications. In addition to dial up videoconferencing, Switched 56 also enables file and/or image transfer; Local Area Network (LAN) access; Group IV fax; and leased line backup or overflow.
"Switched 56 via the DCO system represents an economical way for telephone companies to support advanced data services," said Chester Williams, Siemens Stromberg-Carlson product manager. "In many cases a major investment in new equipment is not required. And because the cost of Switched 56 can be based on usage, as opposed to fixed cost for a dedicated line, it is a high-value business solution."
Delivering Switched 56 service through the DCO does require external hardware to provide the interface to the Customer Premise Equipment (CPE). No additional hardware is required in the DCO system itself, providing that digital trunks in the form of T1 interfaces are available. The subscriber's Switched 56 compatible CPE is connected to a Data Service Unit (DSU) using a V.35 interface. These DSUs connect to the public network through Switched 56 compatible transmission equipment such as Siemens Stromberg-Carlson's 4-Wire Office Channel Unit Dataport (OCUDP), 91466-03 OCUDP, which is mounted in a Siemens Stromberg-Carlson 9004B channel bank.
Siemens Stromberg-Carlson is the third-leading supplier of advanced telecommunications switching equipment to the Bell Operating Companies, designing, developing and manufacturing digital central office switching systems, broadband switching systems, packet switching systems and transmission equipment. Based in Boca Raton, the company has manufacturing and other functional groups in Lake Mary, Fla. It is part of the Siemens U.S. group of companies which had combined sales of $4.9 billion in fiscal year 91/92, with 35,000 employees at over 400 sales and service locations and 70 manufacturing, assembly and engineering locations.
