SIEMENS STROMBERG-CARLSON CUTS OVER 80,000-LINE EWSD(R) SYSTEM FOR SOUTHERN BELL

BOCA RATON, Fla., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Siemens Stromberg-Carlson announced today that it has cut into service an 80,000-line EWSD digital central office for Southern Bell. The cutover, which took place on June 26 at the Boca Main Central Office in Boca Raton, marks the largest EWSD end office installation yet for Siemens Stromberg-Carlson.
The Boca Main EWSD system will serve a cross section of business and residential customers in this densely populated South Florida community. The system will be equipped with the latest software releases, including National ISDN(A) (Integrated Services Digital Network), to provide Southern Bell subscribers with the most advanced voice and data services.
"We have worked closely with Siemens Stromberg-Carlson to ensure that the EWSD system is capable of meeting our subscribers' increasingly sophisticated telecommunications needs. Southern Bell will now be able to deliver a range of advanced services, including ISDN, enhancing communications capabilities for businesses and residents," said Buck Passmore, regional manager at Southern Bell.
"The Boca Main installation is notable for Siemens Stromberg-Carlson because a part from being a significantly large switch, this EWSD system serves our company headquarters in Boca Raton, making us a primary customer for some of these advanced services," said Fred Fromm, senior vice president of sales at Siemens Stromberg-Carlson.
Siemens Stromberg-Carlson is the third-leading supplier of advanced telecommunications switching equipment to the Bell Operating Companies, designing, developing and manufacturing digital central office switching systems, broadband switching systems, packet switching systems and transmission equipment. Based in Boca Raton, Fla., the company has manufacturing and other functional groups in Lake Mary, Fla. It is part of the Siemens U.S. group of companies which had combined sales of $4.9 billion in fiscal year 91/92 with 35,000 employees at over 400 sales and service locations and 70 manufacturing, assembly and engineering locations.
 (A) -- National ISDN is a set of standards established by Bellcore. ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) allows today's copper-wire public network to transmit voice, data, text and video simultaneously over a single telephone line.
