1.8 MILLION LINE DIGITAL SWITCH ORDER
BOCA RATON, Fla., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Siemens Stromberg-Carlson announced it has signed a contract with Ameritech Services, Inc. of Hoffman Estates, Ill., to provide EWSD (R) digital switching systems throughout Ameritech's operating region.
Over 100 EWSD systems -- a total of 1.8 million lines -- will be installed between 1992 and 1996 as part of Ameritech's plans for replacing its switches and deploying ISDN(A). Ameritech will be deploying digital, ISDN-capable central office switches throughout most of its territory by 1996.
The Ameritech contract is the single largest U.S. contract ever for Siemens Stromberg-Carlson, the third supplier to the Bell Operating Companies. All the EWSD systems will be manufactured at the company's Lake Mary, Fla., facility.
(A) -- ISDN, or Integrated Services Digital Network, is a communications technology that allows simultaneous transmission of voice, data, graphics and video over a single telephone line.

The Siemens Stromberg-Carlson systems will be used to provide advanced telephone features to customers in all the major metropolitan areas served by Ameritech.
According to Hasholzner, the ISDN capabilities of the EWSD were a key factor in the awarding of the contract to Siemens Stromberg-Carlson. "Siemens, is one of the pioneers in ISDN development. We look forward to building upon our current relationship with Ameritech as we strengthen our partnership for the deployment of this exciting technology, permitting new and valuable services to be offered by Ameritech customers."
