SIEMENS AND BLAUPUNKT TO MARKET PC-VCR

NEW YORK, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- GSE Electronic Systems, Inc. today announced that two major German electronics companies, Siemens and Blaupunkt, have joined another major company to begin selling the first- ever PC-VCRs into the European marketplace. The PC-VCRs introduced to Europe by the three companies is a high-end videocassette recorder that incorporates GSE's patented RAPID(tm) Time Code to interface with a personal computer and can be used as a multimedia computer peripheral.
In May of this year Mitsubishi Electric and GSE began test-marketing a PC-VCR in Europe. Mitsubishi began the race for multimedia peripherals in the European market, following NEC's introduction into the U.S. market last year of NEC's PC-VCR, which is also based on GSE's RAPID technology. The multimedia device has all of its functions controlled from a personal computer through a RS-232 interface and integration of an adaptor board developed and produced by GSE. An integrated RAPID timecode generator and reader enables the unit to advance or return to any point on the videotape with frame-exact accuracy.
The PC-VCR is designed for use with video editing systems and is particularly suited for multimedia applications, permitting both video editing and specific-point access similar to CD-ROM technology. The Mitsubishi unit has been well received by video enthusiasts and semiprofessional users in Europe as was the NEC unit in the United States.
With the addition early next year of the Siemens model FM 709 and the Blaupunkt RTV 950, the market for computer-controlled VCRs is clearly gaining momentum. GSE's president, Peter Roggendorf, indicated that the company has received inquiries from a number of other U.S. and Japanese VCR and multimedia software producers with regard to PC-VCR technology. "With the growing importance of computerized multimedia applications, we anticipate that 1993 will witness a number of other major firms entering the market with video equipment enhanced with GSE's RAPID technology," he said.
GSE Electronic Systems, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of consumer and semiprofessional video peripheral equipment. Its principal offices are located in New York City, with R&D and production facilities situated in Mainz, Germany. In addition to video editing, mixing and color-enhancing equipment, GSE produces the MPE-200sx Multi Production Editor, again voted "Best Editor of the Year," which incorporates the company's patented GSE RAPID technology.
