LADY SPLODGE has been a lady of leisure for a large part of the last 498 days as connections felt the diminutive mare needed time to mature after her last outing, writes Jessica Lamb.

Despite being weak and backward, the five-year-old showed promise when finishing third on her debut for Clive Cox, and new trainer George Baker is hoping she shows she is now the finished article in the 1m1f maiden at Wolverhampton (9.20).

"We've had her about three months and have just brought her along steadily," said Baker yesterday.

"We now think she is ready to run a big race."
