 SHUTTLE ASTRONAUTS THANK BOSE FOR 'AWESOME' SPEAKERS;
 NEW BOSE SPEAKER UNITS REVOLUTIONIZE AUDIO COMMUNICATIONS
 FRAMINGHAM, Mass., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- A specially designed Bose speaker is receiving rave reviews from an elite clientele -- American astronauts on the space shuttles Endeavour, Columbia and Atlantis and their colleagues on ground control. Serving a critical function in these space shuttle missions, the Bose speaker is installed in the communication system and has helped astronauts inside the shuttle to better hear and understand communications from mission control and from fellow spacewalking astronauts.
 The new audio communications system with Bose speakers was first used in early May 1992 during the Endeavour mission. Astronauts used the system to listen to ground control, and hear each other during spacewalk and satellite repair activities. In addition to carrying voice communications, the system was also used to convey any necessary alarm, caution, warning and emergency signals.
 The recent Columbia mission -- the longest in NASA history -- also focused on Space Station Freedom experimentation. The Columbia crew relied heavily on the new speaker units for communications with ground control and fellow astronauts while conducting 24 hour on-going experiments in a pressurized lab located in the cargo bay.
 The system combines two speakers in a single housing. The speakers built into the unit are based on the company's popular Acoustimass-5 Series II speaker system.
 NASA determined that the speaker used in previous shuttle missions did not provide the clear, crisp sound necessary for important exchanges between astronauts and ground control. This is an especially important concern in missions such as the Endeavour's, which included a great deal of critical extra-vehicular activity.
 NASA engineers approached Bose after hearing the Acoustimass-5, which has been widely acclaimed for the natural, accurate sound its compact speakers are able to reproduce. Bose's engineering department then provided NASA with numerous samples of Bose speakers that could withstand the rigors of space travel while delivering superior audio performance, and proceeded to work with NASA in customizing the speakers for the shuttle application.
 On the first day of the Endeavour mission the crew reported that the new speaker units were "awesome" and they expressed their appreciation for all who were involved in the speaker's development. Said a project engineer, "It has been very satisfying to watch downlink video of the astronauts at work without their headsets on because it means they are relying on the speakers for their audio communications."
 Each spacecraft uses two speaker units, each of which measures roughly 6 inches x 5 inches x 5 inches. One is positioned in the flight deck, where astronauts control the orbiter and have a clear view of space, and the other is located mid-deck, where astronauts conduct experiments, eat meals and sleep.
 All future space shuttles will incorporate the systems, and all existing NASA spacecraft are to be retrofitted with them.
 "We are very proud that NASA has selected Bose speakers and has recognized our unique ability to provide the quality sound system required for upcoming missions," said Sherwin Greenblatt, president of Bose Corporation.
 "Not only does accurate, reliable reproduction of sound contribute to people's enjoyment of music, but in this case, it plays a central role in ensuing the safety of our astronauts," he added. "Everyone at Bose Corporation is thrilled to be able to make this contribution."
 Bose Corporation was founded in 1964 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Dr. Amar G. Bose. Today, Bose is one of the best- known names in the world of audio equipment. Bose high fidelity loudspeakers are the best selling in the United States, Japan, Europe, Australia and Canada. In addition to NASA space shuttles, Bose speakers can be found in vehicles made by Acura, Audi, General Motors, Honda, Infinity, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan.
