SHREWSBURY COAL COMPANY EMPLOYEES RECEIVE TERMINATION NOTICE

SHREWSBURY COAL COMPANY EMPLOYEES RECEIVE TERMINATION NOTICE
OIL CITY, Pa., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Valley Camp Coal Company has sent advance notice, as required by law, informing 30 salaried and 94 hourly employees of the Shrewsbury Coal Company, Shrewsbury, W.Va., that operations will cease on or before Nov. 1, 1992.
The Shrewsbury mining complex consists of underground and surface mines as well as a preparation plant. Shrewsbury Coal Company is one of four coal producing units owned by The Valley Camp Coal Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Quaker State Corporation (NYSE: KSF).
Shrewsbury was reactivated in May 1990 following an extended shutdown; however, operational difficulties have curtailed output and created cost overruns that have caused significant losses. Problems included bad underground roof and coal conditions and more-expensive-than-expected plant and equipment costs.
Valley Camp Chairman James D. Berry III, says, "We regret that our plan to put Shrewsbury back in operation and its people back to work was not successful. We are studying the financial impact of the shutdown and will account for closing costs and any necessary reserves as part of the third quarter earnings report."
The announcement, which was mailed under provisions of the Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, ensures that all employees are guaranteed full pay for 60 days from the date of the notice, Sept. 1, 1992.
