SHOTTS STARS SHOT.
Byline: CRAIG BROWNA SNIPER armed with a high-powered air rifle shot three players at a football match yesterday.
The gunman opened fire during a league match between junior sides Blantyre Vics and Shotts Bon-Accord at Blantyre, Lanarkshire. The referee abandoned the game for fear other players would be hurt.The incident happened 40 minutes into game, with the score at 0-0.
Shotts player Kevin Wilson, 27, was hit on the shoulder. Team-mate Duncan Sinclair, 35, was struck in his leg, and Blantyre goalkeeper Scott Thomson was wounded on his side.
The gunman opened fire from a house overlooking the ground. At first, club officials thought Wilson had been hit by a stone.
Shotts committee member Geordie Hunter said: "He pulled down his shirt and we realised he had been hit with an air pellet and it was lodged in his shoulder."
Team doctors removed pellets from Sinclair and Thomson. Wilson was taken to Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride, for an operation. Last night, his condition was said to be comfortable.
Mr Hunter said: "It's a bad day for football when this sort of thing happens.
"It was probably just some teenager looking for some mindless fun and thought taking pot shots at the players would do."
Central League secretary Scott Robertson said: "This is a disgrace. The lad was hit on the shoulder, but if it had been slightly higher it could have been his eye."
