SHOTGUN VICTIM HIT 22 TIMES.

Byline: By MICHAEL DOYLE

A MAN died from shotgun injuries to the head and chest, an inquest heard yesterday.

James Healy, 30, from Paulstown, Carlow, was gunned down on September 3 at Coolyhune near St Mullins as he fenced a field with his brother.

A jury yesterday returned a verdict of unlawful killing after deliberating for 15 minutes. The same jury delivered a verdict of suicide on Michael Kehoe who shot him.

State Pathologist Marie Cassidy said the victim sustained 22 pellet injuries to his back, four to the head, eight to the face and five to his left arm.

Mr Healy's brother Brian told the inquest his brother James had gone to Graignamanagh Garda Station earlier that morning and handed over documents to gardai which contained solicitor's correspondence relating to the site.

Mr Healy said he and James were going to fence the site on that day.

He told the inquest when they were at the site Michael Kehoe had asked them to allow him to move his tractor.

They let him do so but Kehoe then went to his house and re-appeared a short time later with a shotgun.

The two brothers ran at this stage but Kehoe opened fire.

He told how Kehoe took aim and he saw James fall.

Gda Redmond Ryan, of Graignamanagh station, arrived on the scene at 11.06am to find the body.

He confirmed the deceased had called to his Garda station that morning and knew this as he had overheard a conversation between Mr Healy and another garda.

The county coroner Dr Brendan Doyle expressed condolences to the victim's widow Yvonne, son James, parents and extended family.

The jury of six men and six women recommended Justice Minister Michael McDowell review the law regarding the issuing of firearm licences.
