SHOPKO TO BUILD 37 STORES IN 1994-96; TEN NEW STORES TO OPEN NEXT YEAR

 GREEN BAY, Wis., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- ShopKo Stores, Inc. (NYSE: SKO) today announced plans to build 37 stores in the next three years, continuing the aggressive expansion of the discount department store chain. Plans call for continued acceleration of new store growth and rapid remodeling of existing stores until the entire chain reflects ShopKo's new Vision 2000 merchandising concept.
 Most of the planned new stores will be built in the geographic region ShopKo currently serves, including 15 Midwest, Mountain and Pacific Northwest states. "These plans reflect our confidence in ShopKo's ability to compete aggressively in the retail industry," said Dale P. Kramer, president and chief executive officer. "We are very pleased with the initial results of Vision 2000, and we are excited about bringing it to the entire ShopKo chain." The 10 new stores and 31 remodeled stores planned for 1994 will bring the number of Vision 2000 stores to 79, representing 61 percent of the ShopKo chain.
 Each of the new stores will feature ShopKo's Vision 2000 merchandising concept, an upscale discount shopping environment with wider aisles, quality name brand and private label merchandise, and innovative fashion displays.
 The 10 ShopKo stores to be built in 1994 include:
 -- Fort Collins, Colo. -- 99,000 square feet, 950 E. Eisenhower;
 -- Houghton, Mich. -- 74,000 square feet, SW corner of Highway M-26 and Sharon Avenue;
 -- Wenatchee, Wash. -- 88,000 square feet, SW corner of Wenatchee Avenue and Maple Street;
 -- Hastings, Neb. -- 74,000 square feet, SW corner of U.S. Highway 281 and 33rd Street;
 -- Monroe, Wis., 74,000 square feet, NW corner of Fourth Avenue and Eighth Street;
 -- Five other locations to be announced later this year.
 The 31 ShopKo stores to be remodeled in 1994 include:
 -- Green Bay, Wis. -- 216 So. Military Ave.;
 -- Appleton Wis. -- 1000 W. Northland Ave.;
 -- Fond du Lac, Wis. -- 616 W. Johnson St.;
 -- Madison, Wis. -- 7401 Mineral Point Rd.;
 -- Madison, Wis. -- 2602 ShopKo Dr.;
 -- Janesville, Wis. -- 2500 U.S. Highway 14;
 -- DePere, Wis. -- 230 No. Wisconsin St.;
 -- Kimberly, Wis. -- 800 E. Maes St.;
 -- Menasha, Wis. -- 1578 Appleton Rd.;
 -- Monona, Wis. -- 2101 W. Broadway;
 -- Madison, Wis. -- 2201 Zeier Rd.;
 -- 20 stores to be announced later this year.
 ShopKo Stores, Inc. is a leading regional discount department store chain with 111 stores in 13 states. ShopKo will open eight stores in 1993 including stores in Dixon, Ill.; Loveland and Longmont, Colo.; Duluth, Minn.; Lacey, Wash.; and Sheboygan, Wis.; and relocated stores in Marshall, Minn., and Mitchell, S.D. Illinois and Colorado will become the 14th and 15th states in the ShopKo chain.
