SHOPKO STORES REPORTS MAY SALES

 GREEN BAY, Wis., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- ShopKo Stores, Inc. (NYSE: SKO) reported sales for the four weeks ended May 29, 1993, decreased 0.9 percent to $127.3 million from $128.5 million during the same period last year. Comparable store sales decreased 1.7 percent.
 For the cumulative 17 weeks ended May 29, 1993, total sales increased 1.2 percent to $492.4 million from $486.7 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales for the cumulative 17 weeks ended May 29, 1993, increased 0.3 percent from the same period last year.
 Dale Kramer, president and C.E.O., stated, "We are disappointed with first quarter results to date despite increased promotional activity. Factors contributing to the disappointing results include adverse weather conditions which negatively affected sales of higher margin softlines and seasonal merchandise, general sluggish economic conditions, competitive pricing pressures and continued low consumer confidence."
 ShopKo Stores, Inc. is a leading regional discount store chain operating 111 stores in 13 states. ShopKo will open eight new stores in 1993 including stores in Dixon, Ill.; Loveland and Longmont, Colo.; Duluth, Minn.; Lacey, Wash.; and Sheboygan, Wis.; and relocated stores in Marshall, Minn., and Mitchell, S.D. Illinois and Colorado will become the 14th and 15th states in the ShopKo chain. ShopKo stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the Philadelphia, Midwest and Pacific exchanges under the symbol "SKO."
