SHOPKO ACTIVITIES, IN THE SPIRIT OF HOLIDAY GIVING, BENEFIT THE NEEDY

GREEN BAY, Wis., Nov. 27 ~PRNewswire~ -- Thousands of needy children and families are benefiting from a variety of activities by the 111 ShopKo Stores and their Care Club volunteers.
"The true spirit of the holiday season comes from giving," said Sheree Olson, ShopKo public affairs manager. "Through our Care Clubs, the holidays will be a happier time for many children and families, not only because of the food and gifts they'll receive, but because people showed they care."
For Thanksgiving, Care Clubs purchased food and prepared dinner baskets, each including a turkey and all the trimmings. ShopKo's donation helped bring Thanksgiving dinners to 2,220 families.
An annual "Giving Gift" program is once again providing donations to charities in communities served by ShopKo. The stores are offering customers exclusive porcelain Christmas villages. Two dollars from each $6 building sold will be given to charities selected by the Care Clubs.
"Our Care Clubs know the needs of their neighbors. They're our link to ShopKo communities," said Olson.
The U.S. Marine Corps and ShopKo are partners in the "Toys for Tots" program. Customers are encouraged to add a toy to their Christmas shopping list and drop it into a collection barrel at ShopKo. The new, unwrapped toys will be given to thousands of children who otherwise might not receive a gift on Christmas morning.
In another program, a donation by ShopKo will be divided among more than 3,000 needy children, each receiving a $25 ShopKo shopping spree. Children can use all or part of their shopping spree to purchase a gift for a parent, brother or sister, helping them learn an early lesson about the true spirit of the holidays.
 SPECIAL SHOPPING EVENT
Senior citizens and people with disabilities will have an easier time finding gifts at ShopKo with a special holiday shopping event Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Guests at each of ShopKo's 111 stores can take advantage of special in-store coupons, red-light specials, free gift wrapping and free coffee and cookies. Free photographs will be given to the first 60 guests who visit Santa, and in the pharmacy, guests can receive blood pressure checks free of charge.
ShopKo employees will be available to escort shoppers who need personal assistance in finding a gift. Carry-out service will also be available. Seniors and people with disabilities will receive a 10 percent discount on their purchases, not including doctor's fees, eyeglasses, prescription drugs, tobacco or items already on layaway.
Upon entering the store, ShopKo guests will receive a coupon sheet with a "Listen and Win" number printed at the top. One number will be announced approximately every half-hour with eight lucky customers winning $25 shopping sprees.
