 SHERWOOD H. SMITH JR. ELECTED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF SPRINGS
 INDUSTRIES; DATE SET FOR ANNUAL SHAREHOLDERS MEETING
 NEW YORK, N.Y., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Sherwood H. Smith, Jr., chairman and president of Carolina Power & Light Company (NYSE: CPL), Raleigh, N.C., today was elected to the board of directors of Springs Industries, Inc. (NYSE: SMI), Fort Mill, S.C., a leading producer of home furnishings, industrial products and finished fabrics.
 Springs' board of directors, meeting today in New York City, elected
Smith. The Board also set April 13, 1992 as the date for the company's annual meeting of shareholders in Fort Mill, with February 25, 1992 as the annual meeting record date.
 Smith joined Carolina Power & Light in 1965 after practicing law in Charlotte, N.C., and Raleigh for five years. He was elected president in 1976 and chairman in 1980. CP&L is a major electric utility serving areas in North and South Carolina. Shares of both CP&L and Springs are traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
 In addition to Springs and CP&L, Smith is a director of Durham Corporation and Wachovia Corporation.
 Within the electric utility industry, Smith serves as chairman of the Nuclear Power Oversight Committee; vice chairman, U.S. Council for Energy Awareness; and president, Southeastern Electric Exchange. He is a past chairman of the Edison Electric Institute. Smith is also a member of the Business Council and The Business Roundtable.
 Long active in local and state civic affairs, Smith is chairman of the Rex Hospital board of trustees, chairman of the Triangle Universities Center for Advanced Studies and vice chairman of the Public School Forum of North Carolina. He is a trustee of the ETV Endowment of South Carolina, the National Humanities Center and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. He holds A.B., and J.D. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is past president of the board of visitors, distinguished alumni award winner, and trustee of the Kenan Institute for Private Enterprise.
