SHERIFF'S YAL SEEKS GOLFERS

EAST LOS ANGELES, March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Golfers and duffers are invited to participate in the 11th Annual East Los Angeles Sheriff's Youth Activities League (YAL) Golf Tournament on Monday, May 17, at Montebello Country Club. Cost is $150 per person, and includes the day of golf and the awards dinner at Steven's Steak House.
This is the 11th year of this tournament that helps support programs for youngsters in East Los Angeles. "The YAL is a positive alternative to gangs and drugs within our community," said Jim Wood, ELA YAL chairman of the board.
"We are in partnership with Sheriff Sherman Block, deputies who are dedicated to pro-active law enforcement, and concerned business and community leaders," Wood said. "Support from the public is vital to the success of this community-based approach to policing."
The ELA YAL expanded its service to the community during the past year by acquiring the former Cleland House on Dozier Street. Renovation of the Community Center was financed with grants from the Weingardt Foundation, Los Angeles Rotary Five, Valverde Construction Co. and other community-based philanthropic-minded groups and businesses.
Major donors also include Anheuser-Busch Inc., Triangle/Budweiser Distributing, businessman Richard Riordan, Lever Brothers and Security Pacific/Bank of America.
The Sheriff's East Los Angeles Youth Activities League was founded in 1978 for the purpose of providing an alternative to gangs in East Los Angeles, the chairman of the board said. "Currently, there are more than 4,000 youngsters enrolled in YAL-sponsored athletic programs in parks that were controlled by gangs." Belia Juarez, executive vice president of the board, said, "With the acquisition last year of our Community Center on Dozier Street, we hope to increase to at least 12,000 the number of youngsters and their families who will be taking part in regularly scheduled YAL activities."
