 SHERATON CIVIC CENTER REOPENS IN BIRMINGHAM;
 NOW ALABAMA'S LARGEST HOTEL
 BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The 771-room Sheraton Civic Center -- more than twice the size of any other hotel in the state -- reopens its doors today after a $42 million renovation and expansion.
 "The Sheraton Civic Center will serve as a catalyst in driving the convention and meeting business in Birmingham," John W. Herold, Jr., ITT Sheraton Corporation executive vice president and president- North American operations, said today in announcing the reopening.
 Herold said the newly renovated and expanded hotel reflects ITT Sheraton's overall goal in North America to have a premiere property in every major business center throughout the continent.
 The Sheraton Civic Center is one of several ITT Sheraton North American hotel projects scheduled for completion in 1992. In total, close to $1 billion is being invested in renovation and construction work in North America and Hawaii.
 The downtown hotel represents an investment of $42 million -- nearly a third of the $139 million expansion of the Birmingham- Jefferson Civic Center. Improvements to the hotel nearly doubled its size -- from 405 rooms to its current 771 -- and include a new 16- story atrium tower wing. The Sheraton Civic Center, owned by the City of Birmingham and Jefferson County, includes 27 suites and 16,000 square feet of meeting space, divisible into 15 meeting rooms which can accommodate up to 800. The attached Civic Center offers 315,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space.
 ITT Sheraton Corporation, a subsidiary of ITT Corporation, is a worldwide network of nearly 450 owned, leased, managed and franchised properties operating in 62 countries. The Sheraton Civic Center is a managed property.
