 HARTFORD, Conn. and BOSTON, Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Shawmut National Corporation (NYSE: SNC) announced today that it has appointed J. Michael Shepherd executive vice president of the corporation. Shepherd will succeed Raymond A. Guenter, 61, as general counsel and secretary when Guenter retires in the spring of 1994. In addition, Shepherd will assume responsibility for the corporate compliance and regulatory functions.
 In announcing Shepherd's appointment, Shawmut National Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joel B. Alvord said, "With the impending retirement of my trusted colleague Ray Guenter, it is gratifying to know that Shawmut will be advised skillfully in the future by a man of Michael Shepherd's experience and character."
 Shepherd joins Shawmut from the Washington office of Sullivan & Cromwell, where he was special counsel and a member of the Banking Group. Prior to joining Sullivan & Cromwell, he served as a senior deputy comptroller of the Currency from 1987 to 1991. In that position, he advised the Comptroller of the Currency on policy matters, including economic policy and international banking, and he was the primary decision maker with responsibility for all national bank corporate applications, including charters, mergers, operating subsidiaries and branch applications.
 Prior to joining the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Shepherd served as associate counsel to the president of the United States. Before his tenure on the White House staff, he was a deputy assistant attorney general at the Department of Justice.
 Shepherd was in private law practice in San Francisco before joining the Justice Department in 1982. He earned a J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1980 and a B.A. degree with Distinction and With Highest Honors from Stanford University in 1977. He currently serves as chair of the Financial Markets and Institutions Committee of the Antitrust Section, vice chair of the Bank Holding Company Acquisitions and Dispositions Subcommittee of the Business Law Section and Vice Chair of the International Banking and Finance Committee of the International Law Section of the American Bar Association.
 Shepherd will relocate to Connecticut.
