 SHELL OIL'S MARINE DEPARTMENT MEETS STRINGENT
 INTERNATIONAL 'ISO 9000 STANDARDS'
 HOUSTON, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Shell Oil Company said today that its marine department has become the first major U. S. oil company marine organization to meet stringent international standards for quality assurance called "ISO 9000."
 The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was established to develop quality standards which companies could use as a foundation for the quality management process. The ISO 9000 standards are a set of internationally recognized quality standards increasingly being used as a prerequisite for international business. More than 40 countries have adopted ISO 9000 as their quality standard.
 "ISO 9000 certification certainly is an honor for our marine organization," said C. W. Wilson, Shell's executive vice president, products. "It exemplifies our commitment to superior performance."
 Shell's marine department is responsible for arranging safe and environmentally sound tanker and barge transportation to and from Shell refineries and terminals throughout the country.
 The company's certification for the ISO 9000 standard was awarded earlier this year by the British Standards Institution. This registration certifies Shell Marine's services of inspecting, clearing, chartering and scheduling vessels, inspection and approval of dock facilities and emergency response.
 After developing a mission statement for the department, a three- tier documentation system was constructed including:
 1) a manual for overview of departmental policies;
 2) procedures supporting major processes within the department;
 3) work instructions with detailed guidance to support individual procedures.
 The system periodically will be audited by the British Standards Institution to ensure that Shell's quality system is continuously improving and conforming to requirements.
