SHELL LAND DISPOSITION IN SOUTHEAST BRITISH COLUMBIA

CALGARY, Alberta, June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Shell Canada Ltd. announced today that it plans to market its remaining land holdings in the Elk Valley in British Columbia over the next two to three years.
"The land disposition is consistent with the company's resources business plans to focus on our core oil and natural gas properties and our 1991 decision to exit the coal industry," said Robert F. Taylor, Shell's executive vice president of resources.
Shell currently owns about 60,000 hectares (150,000 acres) in the Elk Valley, near Fernie. Most of the land is in an area extending from the town of Elko to the town of Elkford, approximately 85 kilometers to the north. Two isolated parcels of land are associated with the main block. One is located east of the Elk Valley in the Island Lake area and the second is located west of the community of Kimberley in the St. Mary's Lake region.
Shell assumed title to these lands when it purchased Crows Nest Industries, the successor to Crow's Nest Pass Coal Co., in 1978.
Since then, Shell has leased or rented some of the land to many local users for a variety of recreational and small business uses. Crestbrook Forest Industries Ltd. owns the timber rights to a large portion of the lands.
Shell Canada also donated 8,900 hectares (22,000 acres) including Mount Broadwood to the Nature Conservancy of Canada in late 1992.
