SHELL HURRICANE ANDREW RELIEF EFFORT TOPS $1 MILLION MARK
HOUSTON, Texas, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Shell Oil Company's Hurricane Andrew relief effort has topped the $1 million mark in contributions from Shell service station retailers nationwide, the company announced today. On Sept. 1, participating Shell retailers in 40 states began contributing 1 cent per gallon for every gallon of gasoline they sell until the program ends on Sept. 15.
Shell has set a goal of $1.5 million in retailer and corporate contributions to victims of Hurricane Andrew in Florida and Louisiana. A $250,000 corporate donation to the American Red Cross already has been made, and nearly $500,000 in relief funds has been distributed to buy relief items in the two states.
"We are deeply gratified with the outpouring of support from our family of retailers," said Bill Schutzenhofer, marketing vice president for Shell. "The response from our customers has been tremendous and it is truly heart-warming to see the results of hours of hard work from Shell volunteers throughout the country."
A Shell tent on Highway 1 in Homestead, Fla., has become the major distribution point for Shell relief efforts. Shell relief staff distributed hundreds of tons of essentials to as many as 9,000 hurricane victims daily. The Shell tent is expected to remain open until Sept. 13 when operations will be turned over to local relief agencies. Shell will use remaining contributions after the tent closes to fill longer term relief needs.
In Louisiana, $25,000 in relief funds were donated to the city of Franklin, La., to help rebuild hurricane-damaged school buildings.
Additionally, Shell Oil employees throughout the country have collected more than 10 tons of canned foods, clothing and other essentials for the relief effort.
