SHELL EASTERN PICKS JACOBS/H&G'S SULPHUR PELLETIZING PROCESS FOR SINGAPORE

SOMERSET, N.J., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE: JEC) announced today that Jacobs/H&G, a member of Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., has been awarded a contract by Shell Eastern Petroleum Ltd. to supply process design, procurement, fabrication and commissioning services for a new 190,000 tons per day (TPD) sulphur pelletizing plant at their refinery complex at Pulau Bukom, Singapore.
The contract value was not disclosed.
Based upon Jacobs/H&G's own proprietary process -- SULPEL -- for producing saleable pellets from molten sulphur, this plant will be the fourth such unit to be supplied to Pulau Bukom, earlier plants having capacities of 75,000 TPD and 150,000 TPD (two units).
"SULPEL is a unique process providing a cost-efficient and environmentally sound route for major oil companies faced with the problem of disposing of sulphur produced as a by-product from refining sulphur-bearing crudes," stated Bill Kerler, vice president of Jacobs. "Pellets produced by SULPEL prevent pollution. They are dust-free, low in moisture content, can be stored outdoors and are stable in both heat and cold. We believe this process will have a positive impact on waste management practices in this industry," Kerler added.
In addition, the process avoids production losses which occur during vat shrinking or breaking, loading, unloading and storage. The product can also be handled by any conventional bulk handling equipment used for granular material. SULPEL pellets are also safe with the explosion and corrosion hazards associated with solid or liquid sulphur virtually eliminated.
This will be the 10th SULPEL plant to be engineered by Jacobs/H&G with capacities ranging from 70,000 TPD to 900,000 TPD in single and multiple streams. These can be found in Qatar, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Curacao for companies such as Esso, Shell, Chiyoda, Mobil and Technip.
Jacobs Engineering Group, headquartered in Pasadena, Calif., provides single-source consulting, engineering, design, architectural, environmental and hazardous waste management, procurement, construction, construction management, contract maintenance and operations services to government and industry worldwide.
