SHELL DISCOVERS NATURAL GAS IN NORTHEAST BRITISH COLUMBIA

CALGARY, Alberta, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Shell Canada Ltd. (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary: SHC) announced today the test results of three wells including its most successful to date in the Monkman Pass natural gas play in northeastern British Columbia.
The West Bullmoose well, owned 100 percent by Shell and located 150 kilometers northeast of Prince George, tested at up to 1.25 million cubic meters (45 million cubic feet) per day of natural gas containing about 20 percent acid gas. The gas will begin being processed at a nearby processing plant later this year.
"This well is Shell's most successful to date in northeast B.C., the area which will provide the focal point for the company's exploration activities for the next four to five years," said Roger Brundrit, vice-president, exploration.
Shell is currently drilling two other exploration wells to the same geological objective at Burnt River and Murray. It plans to drill three wells each year for the next few years.
Shell has had an interest in northeast British Columbia since the early 1960s. The company recently tested two wells in the Gwillim area. They have flow rates of up to 600,000 cubic meters (21 million cubic feet) and 800,000 cubic meters (28 million cubic feet) per day, respectively, with acid gas content of 35-40 percent. Both have been suspended pending evaluation of future production plans. They are jointly owned by Shell and Imperial Oil Resources Ltd.
Shell renewed its activity in northeast British Columbia after the Boulder natural gas discovery in 1988 which flowed at up to 460,000 cubic meters (16 million cubic feet) per day.
Shell has a majority interest in 167,000 hectares in the area. The Monkman Pass play covers 960,000 hectares and is estimated to contain 170 billioin to 200 billion cubic meters (six trillion to seven trillion cubic feet) of natural gas.
