SHELF REGISTRATION FILED BY NEW ENGLAND TELEPHONE

 BOSTON, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- New England Telephone filed a shelf registration today with the Securities and Exchange Commission for $450 million in debt securities. The company also has $50 million remaining from a prior shelf registration.
 In a shelf registration, a set amount of securities is registered with the SEC for possible future sale in amounts of the issuer's choosing, not to exceed the total amount registered.
 Proceeds from the securities would be used to refinance outstanding debt or for general corporate purposes. Sale dates will be set based on market conditions.
 New England Telephone is a wholly owned subsidiary of NYNEX Corporation (NYSE: NYN).
