SHELDAHL SIGNS MULTI-YEAR, $10 MILLION AGREEMENT WITH SIEMENS; NOTES PROGRESS IN EUROPEAN AUTOMOTIVE MARKET

NORTHFIELD, Minn., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Sheldahl, Inc. (NASDAQ: SHEL), said today that it had entered into a four-year, $10 million agreement with Siemens Automotive Division, of Toulouse, France. Under the terms of the partnership agreement, Sheldahl will provide the flexible interconnect for a new intelligent switching unit developed by Siemens for a major European automotive manufacturer. The unit integrates all electronic and electrical functions, and provides substantial space and weight reductions, along with increased reliability. Sheldahl will begin production of the interconnects in late 1994 and expects to realize sales from the agreement starting in 1995.
Siemens chose Sheldahl as its supplier because of the company's commitment to the European automotive market, as well as its high volume and materials integration capabilities. While Sheldahl is a major supplier of flexible interconnects to major U.S. automotive manufacturers such as Ford, General motors, and Chrysler, the agreement constitutes a major step in the company's penetration of the European automotive market.
James E. Donaghy, Sheldahl's president and CEO, said, "The agreement with Siemens validates Sheldahl's long-term strategy to penetrate the European vehicle market -- one that holds great potential for us. Working in partnership with a major component manufacturer such as Siemens will enable us to advance our European business plan in a comprehensive fashion."
Sheldahl is the leading manufacturer of flexible interconnects in the United States. The company's core technology involves the conversion of basic materials into technical laminates that are sold as foils and tapes. The company also uses these laminates as the base for such products as antennas, electronic shielding, insulation, flexible interconnects, and specialized fabrications. Sheldahl has strategically located design and technical centers in the Western, Midwestern, and Eastern regions of the United States, and in Great Britain, as well as an administrative/sales office in France.
