SHELDAHL SIGNS AGREEMENTS WITH AIRBAG MANUFACTURERS

NORTHFIELD, Minn., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Sheldahl, Inc. (NASDAQ: SHEL) said that it had reached agreements with two of the world's largest airbag system manufacturers, Morton International and TRW, Inc., to provide them with the company's proprietary barrier and fire-retardant tape products. Sheldahl's barrier tape is used to seal the container of propellant that inflates the airbag from air and moisture, so it works properly in the event of an accident. Sheldahl also produces a fire-retardant cable tape that insulates and protects the switch in the car's steering column through which the airbag detonation signal travels in the event of a crash. Morton and TRW are major suppliers of airbag systems to world automotive markets. Sheldahl said that the annual market for its airbag tape products is currently $4 million and should exceed $12 million by 1996.
James E. Donaghy, Sheldahl's president and chief executive officer, said: "Our relationships with Morton International and TRW effectively open worldwide markets for our automotive airbag products, and should enable us to achieve market leadership."
The U.S. light-vehicle airbag market currently stands at 27 million units, is growing at a 20 percent annual rate, and is expected to exceed 45 million airbags by 1996. Growth is fueled by legislation requiring all new vehicles to have driver-side airbags by 1995. Most automobile manufacturers are incorporating passenger-side bags as well.
Sheldahl's core technology involves the conversion of basic materials into technical laminates that are sold as foils and tapes. The company also uses these laminates as the base for such products as antennas, electronic shielding, insulation, flexible interconnects and specialized fabrications. Sheldahl has strategically located design and technical centers in the Western, Midwestern and Eastern regions of the United States and in Great Britain, as well as an administrative/sales office in France.
