SHELDAHL RECEIVES TWO PATENTS ON PROPRIETARY PRODUCT PROCESS
NORTHFIELD, Minn., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Sheldahl, Inc. (NASDAQ: SHEL) announced today that it has received two U.S. patents protecting its new Novaclad(R) product and the process used to produce it. Product patents have also been issued in Taiwan, and are applied for and pending in Europe and Japan. The patented Novaclad process involves evaporating and overlaying copper onto film to provide a base which will conduct electronic signals. The material enables Sheldahl to produce the world's thinnest flexible printed circuit at a much lower cost than before.
Novaclad is an extremely thin, adhesive-bonded copper-clad laminate that is unique in that it does away with glue, the weak link in the lamination and subsequent fabrication processes. This makes Novaclad ideal in environmentally challenging environments such as fuel or oil- level sensors and anti-lock brakes, in which the product is immersed in fluids that would dissolve other materials; or in high-temperature environments, such as under the hood of a car.
James E. Donaghy, Sheldahl's president and chief executive officer, said of the product: "We're extremely excited about the opportunities Novaclad affords in the marketplace. It's truly a one-of-a-kind product that makes other materials obsolete. Our customers tell us that Novaclad provides them with design capabilities and cost savings that were not possible before. Order volume reflects this growing interest." Added Donaghy, "We expect Novaclad to have a significant impact on the automotive and communications electronics industries as they strive to pack more functions and memory into small packages, while reducing their costs."
Novaclad will serve to open new circuit markets for Sheldahl. Internally, Novaclad is used by the company in its Novaflex(R) flexible circuit product. It also presents extensive application opportunities to OEMs in the automotive and communications electronics sectors. Because the product is extremely thin and light and capable of holding more memory, it's ideal in miniaturization electronics, including memory card or "smart card" applications, and in the growing flash-memory card field. It's also ideal for use where component density is essential, such as dashboard computers, cellular phones, and increasingly smaller laptop or notebook computers.
Sheldahl, Inc. provides customers worldwide in the automotive and communications electronics, aerospace, consumer and materials markets with innovative solutions to meet their needs via its materials, special fabrications and flexible interconnect products. Sheldahl has strategically located design and technical centers in the Western, Midwestern and Eastern regions of the United States, and in Great Britain.
