SHEEHAN SETS UP A FINE WIN.
ALL-IRELAND JFC CLUB FINAL St Mary's (Kerry) 3-15
Swanlinbar (Cavan) 1-05
ST MARY'S CAHERCIVEEN came on strong in the second half to comfortably beat St Mary's Swanlinbar in Saturday's AIB All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship Final.
Swanlinbar dominated the early exchanges and led 1-3 to 0-2 after 15 minutes with the goal coming from cornerforward Mark Cunningham after his shot was deflected past Caherciveen goalkeeper Damian Horgan.
Slowly but surely though Caherciveen warmed to the task, and with Kerry star Bryan Sheehan exerting more of an influence at midfield they out-scored Swanlinbar by 0-5 to 0-1 in the period before the break to draw level at half-time.
Sheehan landed three of those points himself, two of them typically well-struck frees, with Swanlinbar's solitary reply a fine effort from wing-forward Christopher Curran.
Corner-forward Sean Cournane had looked dangerous whenever the ball came his way in the first half, and he scored two fine goals early in the second half that swung the match decisively the Kerry side's way.
Both were classy finishes, the first a delicate lob over Swanlinbar goalkeeper Gavin Leydon, the second a coolly slotted effort after Caherciveen full-forward Paul O'Donoghue did the donkeywork to set him up.
O'Dononghue proved he can take chances as well as make them by scoring two fine points in the second half, and by the finish the Caherciveen full-forward line was toying with their markers like cats with mice.
Swanlinbar were plugging leaks all over the place in defence, and at the other end of the field they were struggling just as badly.
They only scored a solitary point in the second half, a free by Cunningham.
The match was effectively over as a contest with 20 minutes left as the Kerry team led by 2-10 to 1-4. Sheehan added further gloss to the final score late on when his '45 sailed all the way to the net to rubberstamp a comprehensive victory.
