 SHAWMUT NATIONAL NAMES BHARAT BHATT
EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT FOR CREDIT ADMINISTRATION
HARTFORD, Conn. and BOSTON, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ - Shawmut National Corporation (NYSE: SNC) today said that it had named Bharat Bhatt executive vice president for credit administration, a new position.
Bhatt, 49, previously was senior vice president for credit policy and portfolio management at Pittsburgh-based Mellon Bank Corporation.
In his new post, Bhatt will be responsible for credit policy, loan portfolio management and credit-related management information systems and will be on the credit policy committee. He will report to David L. Eyles, Vice Chairman and chief credit policy officer.
Eyles said, "Bharat's broad experience in all lines of business, particularly portfolio management, will help us to continue the healthy and prudent growth of Shawmut National's asset base, while reducing and diversifying our credit-risk profile. Bharat will also play a key role in integrating a credit perspective with the strategic and business planning process. To that end, he will be a member of the strategic planning and asset and liability management committees."
Eyles said that the appointment of Bhatt is part of a continuing effort to strengthen Shawmut National's credit culture.
"Bharat is the latest of a number of talented credit officers who have joined us in recent months," Eyles said, "including Mike Falk, Senior Vice President for commercial work-out; Mary DeLoache, Senior Vice President for credit training; and Christine Cook, Vice President of the loan approval group."
Bhatt joined Mellon in 1988 after 17 years at Chemical Bank in New York where he worked in corporate finance, portfolio management, Lesser Developed Country debt conversions and other areas.
Bhatt is a graduate of the University of Bombay in India with degrees in commerce and law. He is also an Associate Chartered Accountant and a graduate of the management program at Harvard Business School.
