 SHAWMUT NATIONAL CORPORATION NAMES
 THOMAS R. RICE TO HEAD INVESTOR RELATIONS
 HARTFORD, Conn., and BOSTON, Sept. 21, 1992 -- Shawmut National Corporation (NYSE: SNC) today named Thomas R. Rice senior vice president for investor relations.
 Previously, Rice, 45, worked at First Bank System Inc., where he was senior vice president for investor relations.
 Rice will report on an interim basis to Gunnar S. Overstrom, president and chief operating officer of Shawmut National, until a chief financial officer is named.
 Overstrom said, "We're pleased that Tom Rice is joining us. He is well regarded among securities analysts, and his experience with an institution that has experienced a full recovery will be valuable."
 Thomas Theurkauf, presently senior vice president for investor relations, shortly is expected to take on responsibilities within one of Shawmut National's business lines. "We're extremely grateful to Tom for his professionalism in representing this corporation to analysts during a difficult period for us," said Overstrom.
 Rice joined First Bank as a vice president for corporate development in 1987. He was named director of investor relations in 1989 and promoted to senior vice president in 1990. From 1980 to 1987, he was a vice president for finance at Bank of New England Corporation.
 He holds a Master's degree in finance from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and a Master's degree in applied mathematics and electrical engineering from Princeton University. He received his undergraduate degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
 He and his wife, Christine, have two children.
