SHAWMUT NATIONAL CORPORATION ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF ALAN BUFFINGTON AS EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

 HARTFORD, Conn., and BOSTON, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Shawmut National Corporation (NYSE: SNC) announced the appointment of Alan R. Buffington as executive vice president of Shawmut Bank and Shawmut Bank Connecticut and head of corporate services group. Buffington will assume the responsibilities of James A. Daley, who retired in late July, and will report directly to Gunnar S. Overstrom, president and chief operating officer of Shawmut National.
 Prior to joining Shawmut, Buffington was senior vice president and head of Systems for the Employee Benefits Group, the largest operating division of Cigna Corporation.
 Previously, Buffington headed Cigna's technology and administration. He also was executive vice president and chief operations officer for Comerica Bank in Detroit and headed the regional service centers for First Interstate Bancorp in Los Angeles.
 "Alan's wealth of technological experience should prove invaluable as we continue our bottom-up analysis of our operations and systems with the goal of reducing costs while maintaining service quality," said Overstrom.
 A graduate of Pepperdine University, Buffington also attended the University of California at Berkeley. He spent three years in the U.S. Army, and is a Vietnam veteran.
 Buffington and his wife, Elaine, and their two daughters live in Avon, Connecticut.
