 SHAWMUT NATIONAL CORP. NAMES ROBERT GUENTHER TO MEDIA POST
 HARTFORD, Conn., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Shawmut National Corporation (NYSE: SNC) today named Robert L. Guenther vice president and director of external communications and media relations, effective June 8.
 Previously, Guenther, 43, was vice president of the Abernathy/MacGregor Group, Inc., a public relations firm in New York City.
 James R. Dorsey, senior vice president for corporate affairs, said, "As the New England economy continues its recovery, the job of communicating Shawmut National's role in that effort becomes increasingly important to us, our shareholders, and our customers. Bob Guenther's experience in financial communication makes him ideally suited to this task."
 Prior to joining Abernathy/MacGregor, Guenther was a reporter for the Wall Street Journal covering banking from 1987 to 1990 and real estate from 1981 to 1987. He began his journalistic career with the Lincoln Star in Nebraska in 1971 and later joined the Minneapolis Star where he was business editor.
 Guenther received a bachelors degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1971.
 Shawmut National Corporation is a superregional bank holding company with assets of $22.7 billion. Its principal subsidiaries are Connecticut National Bank in Connecticut and Shawmut Bank in Massachusetts. The company focuses on offering a range of financial products and services to consumers and small- to medium-sized companies. The company also offers financial services to correspondent banks, governmental entities, and corporate customers based in New England and select national markets. Shawmut National operates a total of 334 branches in southern New England.
